Beyond the Possible: How Young People Learned to Turn Their Experiences into Powerful Writing

When a safe space emerges, a voice emerges. The nonprofit organization beYOUnd has successfully completed a series of online workshops as part of the «Your Voice – Your Power» project, aimed at developing storytelling skills and promoting social integration among young people.

It is important to our organization that everyone has the power to take action and that every person’s voice is heard. The «Your Voice – Your Power» project has become a platform for those who are often overlooked by society: internally displaced persons, members of ethnic communities, and activists finding their place in new communities.

From Reflection to Text: Four Thematic Meetings

Throughout January and February, we held a series of intensive workshops, each of which provided a space for in-depth exploration of identity and personal experiences. For each session, we invited relevant experts to provide participants with professional guidance and a deeper understanding of the subject matter:

  • «The Story of Your Relocation Without Labels» (January 25) — a focus on the experiences of internally displaced persons and overcoming stigma. Rada, a representative of the beYOUnd team, shared her perspective and professional expertise.
  • «Stories of the Crimean Tatars: Loss and Preservation» (January 31) — a reflection on cultural identity and the power of memory. Expert support was provided by Arslan, a representative of the Ave Team, who highlighted the importance of preserving identity today.
  • «My Story Begins with Me» (February 1) — a workshop on self-discovery and personal storytelling techniques. Victoria from the NGO Up to Date served as the expert, helping participants embrace their own path as a source of strength.
  • «Roma Stories: Voices and Experiences of Representation» (February 7) — a discussion about combating stereotypes and the right to have a voice. Tetyana from the NGO ТЕНЕТ, provided expert insight, emphasizing the importance of authentically representing communities.

Together with trainers Roksolana Kryvenko and Oleksandra Ivashchenko, the participants explored the structure of a compelling story, looked for details that add depth, and wrote the first drafts of their texts.

Firsthand accounts: participants’ experiences

The best measure of a project’s success is the feedback from those we work for. The participants noted not only the professionalism of the training but also the special atmosphere of support:

«During the session, I learned a lot of useful information about storytelling and how personal stories can drive change. The support from the mentors while discussing painful topics was very valuable», Kateryna shares.

For many, the workshops served as a catalyst for a deeper understanding of themselves. Eleonora notes: «The practical exercises were the most valuable. They helped me understand myself better and gave me the motivation to take even greater action».

And Margarita emphasizes the importance of community: «I totally loved everyone at the event; I heard so many awesome stories that will definitely come in handy in my life».

Project Impact and Results

At beYOUnd, we believe that learning should be practical. That is why the project went beyond just workshops.

Key project metrics:

  • 34 participants completed the educational phase.
  • 12 people moved on to the individual mentoring support phase.
  • 11 unique stories were published in the final online booklet.

Why is this important to the beYOUnd mission?

This project demonstrates our commitment to the principles of inclusivity and youth empowerment. We create an environment where young people don’t just consume content, but become agents of change, honing their soft skills and feeling genuine support.

For our partners and donors, this case serves as an example of effective advocacy through culture and personal narratives. Every story we’ve helped shape is a step toward a more open and understanding society.

The «Your Voice — Your Power» initiative is part of the Let’s NGO project, which is being implemented by NGO «Ukrainian Professional Development» with support from the National Endowment for Democracy.
